Free Virtual Worlds for Making Friends: Teens 13+ and Adults

By Kirouff Games, the independent studio behind Palm Social · Facts checked October 24, 2026

Disclosure: we make Palm Social, one of the games on this page. It is kept out of the list below and described separately at the end, so you can judge the others on their own.

The short answer

A virtual world is a place that keeps running when you log off: you have an avatar, other real people are around, and there is usually somewhere that is yours. That makes them some of the easiest games to make friends in, because you keep running into the same people.

All of the worlds below are free to start and are for teens or adults. Most need a download or an app; only a couple open in a browser. Worlds made for young kids, like Animal Jam and Webkinz, are covered in our Club Penguin alternatives guide instead.

Each one in a sentence or two

VRChat

Huge variety of player-made worlds and avatars, with lots of voice chat. You do not need a VR headset to play on PC.

Roblox

Millions of user-made games, including many hangouts. It has a very young audience, and chat features need an age check.

Second Life

The long-running 3D world built almost entirely by its residents: clubs, homes, roleplay communities and live music. Aimed at adults.

Habbo

The classic pixel hotel, still running, plus Habbo Origins for the 2000s version.

Highrise

Rooms, outfits, trading and events, with an active social scene.

IMVU

Chat rooms and decorated spaces, with a big focus on avatar fashion.

Avakin Life

Apartments to furnish, public places to hang out and lots of outfits.

Woozworld

A virtual world built around style and being seen. It now targets players 16 and older.

Toontown Rewritten

A free fan-run revival of Disney's Toontown Online. Many adults who played it as kids are back, and teaming up makes it easy to meet people.

Pony Town

A simple pixel world for chatting and roleplay that runs in a browser tab.

How people actually make friends in virtual worlds

  • Do something together. It is easier to talk while surfing, playing a game or working a shift than in an empty chat room.
  • Go back to the same places. Regulars at the same café, beach or club start to recognize each other.
  • Add people right away. A friends list is what turns a good conversation into a friendship.
  • Invite them over. Having a home of your own gives you somewhere to meet.

Staying safe

  • Keep your real name, school, address, phone number and social accounts to yourself.
  • Keep conversations inside the game. Be careful with anyone who pushes to move to another app or to meet in person.
  • Ignore "free coins" links and never share your password.
  • Use block and report. That is what they are for.
  • Parents: check each game's age rules and chat settings together with your teen.

Our own community rules are written for a 13-year-old reader and explain how reporting, blocking and appeals work in Palm Social.

Our game: Palm Social

Palm Social is a free 3D virtual world set in a realistic beach town, and it runs in your web browser on a computer or phone, with nothing to download. It is built around doing things together: surf, shoot pool, go to the cinema, take shifts at the café, work out at the gym or go mining, then invite new friends back to a home you built and furnished yourself.

The honest details: it opened on October 24, 2026, and it is made by Kirouff Games, an independent developer. You need a free account (email, Google or Apple). Players must be 13 or older, and players under 18 need a parent or guardian's permission. There are two servers with room for up to 150 players each. Optional Gold packs exist, and Gold can also be earned by playing.

How we checked

On October 24, 2026 we checked each world against its official site or store listing for whether it is running and where it can be played. We list ages only where a game states them, we do not include ratings, and nobody paid to be listed. If something here is out of date, email support@playpalmsocial.com and we will correct it.

Frequently asked questions

Which free virtual world is best for making friends?

It depends on how you like to talk. For voice chat, VRChat. For a busy phone app, Highrise or Avakin Life. For a deep adult world, Second Life. For something that opens in a browser tab, Pony Town or Palm Social, which we make. Worlds where you do things together tend to make it easier to start a conversation.

Are there virtual worlds for teens 13 and older?

Yes. Many worlds on this page allow teens, but check each game's own age rules before you sign up; Woozworld is for 16 and older and Second Life is aimed at adults. Palm Social is for players 13 and older, and players under 18 need permission from a parent or guardian.

Which virtual worlds run in a browser?

Very few. Pony Town and Palm Social run in a browser tab. Most other virtual worlds now need a download or an app.
